Summary:A flow-down filter for removing solid waste from a source of water comprises an inclined mesh (38) and supply means (30), for supplying the water to be filtered to the upper surface (40) of the mesh; whereby a portion of water (50) that passes through the mesh to run along the underside (46) thereof is removed by a scavenger plate (54) in contact with the lower surface of the mesh. The scavenger plate acts to deflect the water away from the mesh thereby drawing more water through and increasing the efficiency of the filter. Preferably, the water supply means is adapted to inject the water substantially vertically against the mesh. The filter may be used in an arrangement for cleaning a swimming pool or fish pond where, beneficially, the supply means receives its water from the underflow of a hydrocyclone (24).
