Summary:A control means (600) for a discharge lamp, has a power input (604) arranged to be connected to an alternating current electrical power supply, and an output arranged to be connected to a discharge lamp (601). The control means is arranged to control the electrical power supplied to a discharge lamp connected to the output. The control comprising a first inductor (611) connected in series between the input and the output, and a second inductor (603) connected in parallel with the first inductor, and a switch means (606), which may be a MOSFET device, in series with the second inductor, the inductors being arranged so that when the switch means is in an on state a lamp connected to the output may be operated at a first power level, and when the switch means is in an off state the lamp may be operated at a second power level, the first power level being higher than the second power level. The control means may also have a controllable trigger means arranged to operate the switch means, using phase angle control to vary the power supplied to the lamp.
