Summary:A surgical device (10) suitable for use in orthopaedic hand surgery where there exists the requirement to dilate a tendon sheath (42) in order to pass a retrieved or harvested tendon (34) through the dilated sheath. The device (10) has an elongate body (12) having a central bore (14) extending from an open (16) to a closed end (18). An inflatable balloon (24) is disposed around a portion of the body (12) in proximity to the closed end (18) thereof. The balloon (24) is in fluid communication with the central bore (14) via perforations (28) in the outer surface of the body (12). The device (10) also includes an aperture (22) in the closed end for receiving a suture (Fig. 5, 36) . Thus, the device (10) may be progressively passed through a tendon sheath (Fig. 5, 42) with the balloon (24) inflated to dilate the sheath, and a tendon portion (Fig. 5, 34) secured to the aperture (22) in the closed end (18) with a suture (Fig. 5, 36) so that the tendon portion (Fig. 5, 34) can be pulled through the dilated sheath by the device (10).
