Summary:A horizontally movable hot-water-feeding plunger unit 7 and sleeve unit 8, and a fixed coffee discharge unit 5 are mounted to the machine base. In a first position (shown) an unsealed chamber 811 is defined by these units, into which ground coffee 1 is fed. In a second position the plunger moves towards the discharge unit whereby O-ring 73 forms with the sleeve a sealed chamber (815, Fig 3) containing the coffee and into which hot water is fed via pipe 721 to discharge as brewed coffee via filter 52 and outlet 54. In a third position the sleeve is withdrawn towards the plunger to form a space (816, Fig 4) from which spent coffee (9) can fall. The moving units slide on rails 44 and are driven by followers 74, 82 which engage slots 611, 612 of a pair of rotating cam plates 61 located one on each side of the units. The movements are under automatic control.
