A shock absorber of the piston and cylinder type incorporating an hydraulic lockout mechanism

The hydraulic lockout mechanism uses an additional lockout piston (28) secured to the piston rod (16) which employs a flexible intake valve (30) to dampen the motion of the piston rod (16) of the shock absorber (10) as the piston rod (16) moves into a position of full extension. When the piston rod...

Summary:The hydraulic lockout mechanism uses an additional lockout piston (28) secured to the piston rod (16) which employs a flexible intake valve (30) to dampen the motion of the piston rod (16) of the shock absorber (10) as the piston rod (16) moves into a position of full extension. When the piston rod (16) initially moves out of full extension into a position of compression, the flexible intake valve (30) of the mechanism flexes to allow fluid to flow through several passageways (34) in the lockout piston (28) of the mechanism. This allows the pressure on both sides of the lockout piston to be equalised quickly and removes the reactive force that would otherwise be experienced by the piston rod as it initially moves out of a position of full extension.
