Summary:A printer comprises a memory (ROM 16) configured to store executable code; a processor (22) coupled to the memory (16) and configured to execute executable code; a print mechanism (14) coupled to the processor (22) and configured to print an image in response to execution of executable code; a memory receptacle configured to removably receive a plug-in expansion memory (34); and a memory controller (30) configured to selectively write executable code into a plug-in memory (34) received by the memory receptacle. It is determined if a user desires to use an expansion memory (34) for data storage or for storing executable code; there being means for copying executable program code from the ROM (16) onto RAM in an expansion memory (34) and switching from providing addresses in the ROM (16) to addresses in the RAM, while the processor (22) is executing executable code, if it is determined that a user desired to use an expansion memory (34) for storing executable code.
