Summary:A mechanism for opening and closing a lid 8 of a wheeled bin 7 comprises a foot pedal which may traverse the full width of the bin. The mechanism is arranged so that gradual depression of the foot pedal can raise the lid through any angle up to 90 degrees, whereas a rapid depression of the pedal can move the lid through 270 degrees to a fully open position. A further rapid depression of the pedal can reclose the lid from its fully open position. In a preferred embodiment, the mechanism includes at least one lifting arm 10 connected to a pedal arm 9 which is mounted on a wheel 3 of the bin, and a spring 12 connecting the lifting arm to the pedal arm so that the lid is normally biased into its closed position and the pedal is biased into a raised position. The lifting arm may have a sprung, telescopic section (see fig 14) to allow for adjustment, and may have impact absorbing members (38, fig 8) attached to prevent damage during opening and emptying.
