Summary:A intermodal container (200) and method for transporting finely divided coal in rail cars or other cargo hauling vehicles, the container (200) having a generally flexible and substantially oxygen impermeable barrier liner (210) defining an encapsulated cavity (211). A port (260), is adapted to substantially prevent exposing finely divided coal to oxygen during passing flowable material through the liner 210. The liner has radial, circumferentially extending bands of reinforcement. The intermodal container is a shell with front doors and the liner is connected to the closed rear end by a tether. Emptying is preferably by tilting the container e.g. by a ram (250, Fig 22). Preferably, corner 220 or side (225, Fig 24) supports for the liner are provided. The supports can be of metal such as aluminium or foamed plastic and are preferably of pyramidal shape. Preferably the filling and emptying port is funnel-shaped to assist in emptying.
