A color filter and manufacturing method thereof are provided which can improve the optical transmittance and diminish the dispersion phenomena due to diffraction and reflection of the incident lights. The color filter has at least two mutually different filtering characteristics respectively corresponding to plural pixels placed in a matrix array on a background substrate. The color filter comprises a planarizing layer (37), a color filter pattern (38, 43, 49) the elements of which correspond to dixels in the substrate and are at the same height above the substrate, a coloring layer (39, 45, 51) comprising at least two, preferably three different colours and a protecting layer (53). The manufacturing method of the color filter comprises the following three processes in which: a first process forms a planarizing layer; a second process forms color filter patterns, preferably by photolithography; a third process applies colouring agents to the surface of the filter patterns; and a fourth process forms a protecting layer.
