Summary: | A shock absorber of the kind which is intended to perform a single energy-absorbing collapse in the event of a supported load being subjected to, for example, an accidental impact, comprises tubular elements 6,7, means 8,9 to cause rolling or scrolling deformation thereof when a force which exceeds a predetermined magnitude is axially applied and shear means 1,2 preventing deformation until said force magnitude is exceeded. Each tubular element 6,7 is of tapering wall thickness (gauge) from a relatively short axially central region thereof of maximum thickness towards its opposite axial ends. An alternative embodiment is described (Fig. 4) in which, instead of pairs of tubular elements 6,7 in a series of stages, a single tubular element (12) is provided that is of tapering wall thickness (gauge) from a region of maximum thickness at one axial end towards the opposite axial end. |
