Summary: | Apparatus for effecting intimate contact of gases and liquids comprises a housing containing a liquid in its lower portion and having disc-shaped impellers (24) for spraying liquid into the gas-liquid contact space, which impellers rotate on parallel shafts (23) axially disposed in the housing and supported above the liquid so that the lower portions of the impellers are immersed in it. Fresh liquid may be introduced (17) beneath the point where the gas is removed (32), and spent liquid removed (18) from the reservoir beneath the point where the gas is introduced (30), to provide countercurrent flow. In one embodiment the apparatus is used to remove sulphur dioxide and fly ash from the flue gas generated by burning coal by employing pulverized limestone or lime in water as the liquid spray in the gas-liquid contact space. |
