Summary: | A gyro-compass apparatus with two degrees of freedom, and hence having a short period of oscillation, wherein the weight of the gyroscope rotor (2) and its housing (2a) are supported vertically by either a thread suspension system (1) or by a liquid or air cushion and the horizontal forces acting upon it are taken up by independent bearings (3). Digital angle reading and setting up is done by using a reference mark on a carrier (7) arranged on an automatic follower element (21). Measurements may also be carried out in combination with a theodolite (23) arranged on a common body e.g. in a vehicle. The azimuth of the reference direction or of a direction sighted using the theodolite, can be determined by adding up the measured angles from the starting direction with the use of a common digital indicator (14) connected to sense angular movement of the gyrocompass pendulum and of the theodolite telescope. |
