Summary: | 17,137. Hough, A. T. Dec. 6. Tanning with special chemicals; mineral tanning.-Compounds or derivatives of silicon are employed for converting hides &c. into leather. Insoluble compounds may be employed, but preferably the soluble salts, such as sodium silicate. A suitable bath may be made by dissolving sodium silicate in water, adding dilute hydrochloric acid, and also sodium chloride. Silicic acid in the colloidal state may be employed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 100,163. |
