2343. Pilkington, W. R. Jan. 29 Oscillating - cylinder pumps. - A foot-operated pump mainly for inflating tyres comprises a base C, to one end of which a treadle B is pivoted, the pump cylinder A being pivoted to the other end. The piston-rod a and the treadle form toggle mechanism, and a spring b normally retains the treadle in a raised position. In the construction shown, the treadle consists of two parallel arms B which are shaped as shown and are connected at their upper ends by a cross-bar fitted with rubber studs b to prevent the foot from slipping. The end of the piston-rod is connected to a cross-bar a pivoted in the arms B. The lower ends of these arms are connected by a cross-bar to which is connected one end of the spring b , its other end being adjustably connected to a bar c by a screw bolt and nut. The base carries stops c limiting the downward motion of the arms, and may be formed of aluminium ; its lower surface may be roughened or provided with rubber pads. The cylinder may be provided with a pressure gauge D and an alarm operated when the desired pressure has been reached. The pump, when not in use, may be held closed by a link b pivoted to the base and engaging the bar a by a slot of such an inclination that, when the treadle is further depressed, the treadle is released. Ball, roller, or knife-edge bearings may be used. In place of the spring b , a pneumatic spring may be employed to hold the parts in position, combined with the piston-rod or arranged separately.
