Summary:23,852. Lutz, A. Oct. 18. [Cognate Application, 3556/13.] Wheel guards and obstruction - removers. Wheel guards A pivoted at the upper end are lowered to the ground and then locked by the contact of an obstacle direct or with a feeler bar W or rope Z. The casing is in two parts divided along the line D-D, and is pivoted at B to an upright E adjustable in height and fixed, in the case of the front wheels, to a part which moves with the wheels during steering movements, and in the case of rear wheels, to the axle, chassis, or body. A bow spring L fixed to the upright E carries two round-headed bolts I, with internal sliding pawls J for engagement with curved racks H. In the normal position of the guard, the bolts I engage depressions H' in the wheel guard. The feeler bars comprise arms R, pivoted at S, resting against pins U, and normally retained by ball catches T, the arms being connected by ball joints to a bar W with rollers; a rope Z is also stretched between the arms. For the rear wheel guards, the bar W and rope Z do not extend across the vehicle. Contact of an obstacle with the bar or rope tilts the guard until the roller G touches the ground, whereupon the pawl J locks the guard down. The arms R are free to rise when released from the spring catches T. The wheel guards used on motor-vehicles are connected by a guard P, which is jointed at the corners to as to alter its shape when the steering-wheels are moved. A vertical guard 0 is also jointed to the casings by joints M. For central-steered vehicles, the guards 0, P are replaced by L- shaped guards, each wheel case carrying a section, and the two sections interlocking in 'the centre of the vehicle.
