Summary: | 5676. Schultze, C. W. March 9. Liquids, purifying; decanting and settling; filters with horizontal filtering partitions or layers; filters, air supply for.-For the purification of water containing lime, reagents are made up into the form of units consisting of a soluble salt to cause a gelatinous precipitate and a fine insoluble powder, which will remain in suspension while coagulation takes place and will enmesh the bacteria and suspended matters. The treated water is allowed to stand for a time and then filtered. A mixture of aluminium sulphate, kaolin, and starch, prepared in tablet form, may be used. For application, the tablet is crushed and mixed with a little water to form a cream. Talc, calcium phosphate, or insoluble earths are mentioned as equivalents for the kaolin and starch. A suitable filter is formed by placing a ball of absorbent cotton in a funnel. |
