Summary: | 16,032. Mitchell, T. W. July 19. Valves and valve gear.-In a duplex.gear for locomotives, the links G work upon co-axial shafts, one passing through the other; each is driven from the crosshead of the other engine by a rod M or M , mounted between the links and valvechest and turning on the same axis as the reversing- shaft I. Each valve receives an unvariable movement equal to its lap and lead from an eccentric P worked from the crosshead of its own piston through the rods M, M and links P . The rod F' connecting the valve spindle F with the link G embraces the eccentric P. The cranks e, e of the engine are at right-angles, and slots in the rods M, M engage pins m on the crossheads, by which the movement of the valve is accelerated towards the middle of the stroke of the acting crosshead. The valve controls two admission ports 1, 2 and exhaust ports 3, 4 at each end of the cylinder. |
