Summary:20,475. Day, C. A., [Lloyd Manufacturing Co.]. Sept. 23. Spokes ; felloes or rims; hubs.-A hub consisting of a single or compound tube is connected by wire spokes in tension to a rim, the flanges of which are rolled down upon a ring supporting the ends of the spokes, or upon the ends of the spokes themselves, so as to draw them tight. The wheels are made in various sizes adapted for use upon agricultural machinery, such as horse hay rakes, or upon baby carriages, children's velocipedes, and similar articles. The wire spokes 15, Fig. 8, are preferably made in pairs ; they are hooked in collars 7 supported by the cup-like collars 5 and the tube 3, and are passed through holes in the grooved inner ring 11, each pair of spokes being connected by a piece of wire between the ring 11 and the rim 9. The parts being assembled, the flanges of the rim 9 are pressed against the inner band, and the spokes are drawn tight and the wheel rendered firm. The wheel is then tinned by dipping it in a bath, so that the joints are secured together. The ring 11 may be replaced by a number of pieces forming a continuous or discontinuous ring, over which pieces the rim ends of the spokes are placed. The spokes may be separate, their rim ends being made with heads which secure them to the inner band 11, or to plates or washers used instead of the band. The single or double spokes are held by the edges of the flanged outer rim 9 when the band, washers, &c. are omitted. Fig. 15 shows a modification in which one of the flanges of the rim 9 is wider than the other ; the spokes 15 pass through recesses in one only of the flanges. The hubs may be made of single tubes 2, Fig. 5, formed with heads or annular ribs 16. The spokes 15 are placed in washers 7 bearing against the ribs 16, and are secured by washers 17, which are held in place by expanding the ends of the tube 2.
