Fig. 4 shows the propeller c, which consists of a number of bladed sections set in the manner shown. That end of the propeller which is nearest to the outer side of the trough a may have more blades than the other end. The propeller is carried by arms h fixed to the shaft f, which has arms i provided with weights k to counterbalance the propeller. The weights may be attached to ropes running over pulleys on the shaft f. A hand-lever g fixed to the shaft may be used for raising and lowering the propeller. The propeller is driven from the pulley e by toothed gearing n, m. When an annular trough a is used with a propeller c and knife roller b on each side, the gearing and counterbalancing-mechanism are placed in the centre
