Summary: | 7850. Forbes, W. T. April. 27. Tanning.-Relates to improvements in the tanning of hides and skins, and in apparatus for solidifying tanned hides, such as those used for sole leather or harness, by forcing into them a dense and preferably clarified tanning-liquor. To the original tanning-liquor, which may be of any desired kind and strength, are added common salt, borax, and Epsom salts, and, in some cases, boracic acid and Glauber's salt. During the tanning operation, an electric current, preferably alternating, is passed through the liquor for about six hours daily. Figs. 1, 2, and 3 show the apparatus employed for the subsequent treatment referred to above, Fig. 3 being a section at the upper part of Fig. 2. Two hides b, b are clamped between a pair of frames a, a', so as to form a bag into which the dense liquor is forced under considerable pressure through an inlet pipe d, which is formed of flat or oval section, as shown in Fig. 3. An outlet pipe e, and an air outlet valve f are also provided. |
