Summary:19,345. Adolfsson, A. E. Sept. 26. Acetylene.-Relates to generating-apparatus in which the carbide is intermittently fed into water, and consists of a device for preventing the entrance of air into the generator when changing water, and the entrance of gas into the generator from the gasometer when filling in carbide. The generator b is provided with an internal or external water chamber a communicating therewith. This chamber has a water-supply pipe f, a pipe e leading to the gasometer, and a pipe open to the atmosphere at its upper end. Acetylene passes from the generator to the holder by a tube d. The lime sludge is removed by a tube n, arranged as shown either in full or dotted lines, always leaving sufficient water in the generator to seal the end of the outlet tube, and prevent any escape of gas. During this operation, the pressure of gas in the holder forces water into the bent end of the tube d, preventing any escape of gas thereby, and also forces a way for itself through the tube e into the vessel a. When water is poured down the tube f, the gas is displaced and driven back to the holder. The escape pipe l is for allowing water to flow out when the required level is attained. When adding fresh carbide, the pressure in the holder is not sufficiently above that of the atmospheric pressure present in the generator to force gas back into the generator.
