Summary: | 10,236. Sandy, W. J. L., Bate, D. C., and Geer, T. May 4. Arc lamps.-A clutch lamp is arranged as shown in section. The upper carbon c passes through holes in two clutch - plates e , which are pivoted to an arm e of a sleeve b, and to a rod e . The sleeve b receives the carbon, and forms or carries the core of a series solenoid a, which tends to lift the sleeve, clutch, and carbon. The sleeve slides as a piston in the solenoid, which serves as a dash-pot. W h e n the sleeve descends, the rod e' is stopped by a plate f, and the clutch frees the carbon. The lamp may be provided with an arc-enclosing globe h, held against asbestos or other packing in a groove in a slate cover f. The upper carbon passes through a flanged tube g, which is free to slide laterally in this cover. |
