Summary:1,262,939. Hydroxyl-containing lactone polyesters. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 21 April, 1969 [30 April, 1968], No. 20188/69. Heading C3R. Hydroxyl-containing polyesters derived from a lactone and having a M.Wt. of 300 to 20,000 have the formula in which R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 hydroxy-alkyl, allyl, cyanoethyl, substituted or unsubstituted C 6 -C 12 aryl or heterocylic radicals; R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 6 -C 12 cycloalkyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy or substituted or unsubstituted C 6 -C 12 aryl and at least n+2 of these radicals in each lactone residue are hydrogen; R 5 is hydrogen or C 1 -C 4 alkyl; n is 4, 5 or 6; and x is zero or an integer. The polyesters are formed by heating lactones of the formula suitably in an oxygen free atmosphere to 50- 300‹ C. in the presence of at least one hydrazine of formula R 1 -NH-NH-R 2 . Preferred reactants are #-caprolactone or a substituted #-caprolaotone (many of the latter being specified), and hydrazine, methyl or phenyl hydrazine or 2-hydrazinoethanol-(1)-zeta-oenantholactone and eta-caprylic lactone.
