Cardboard cartons, waste paper and like materials are subjected to the action of a beating device before delivery by a conveyer 14 to a baling machine, the beating device comprising a series of flails 3 pivoted on axes 5 on a rotary drum 2. Each flail is preferably in the form of a twisted strip of spring steel, and weighted at one end. Feeding of the material is assisted by a reciprocable plate 6 mounted on pivoted linkage 7, 8, 9 so as to be movable in a substantially arcuate path. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the plate 6 is replaced by a second endless conveyer (16) having a lower run inclined to the upper run of the conveyer 14. The conveyer 14 may comprise chains and laths or a wire mesh belt.
