Summary:1,194,699. Manufacture of paraffin sulphonic acids. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 28 Dec., 1967, No. 58828/67. Heading C2C. Paraffin sulphonic acids, which are extensively free of sulphuric acid, are produced by submitting the crude aqueous sulphonic acid solution (which has been obtained by simultaneous reaction of SO 2 and O 2 with a paraffinhydrocarbon in the presence of water), if desired after preliminary separation of part of the sulphuric acid by heating, at a temperature of 60-180‹ C. to a flash distillation and separating the sulphuric acid which forms as a lower layer from the evaporation residue. The flash distillation is preferably carried out in vacuo, any dissolved SO 2 being removed, if desired, before flashing. Examples prepare paraffin sulphonic acids from a C 14-18 paraffin cut.
