Summary: | 1,130,245. Vinyl esters. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 3 April, 1967 [5 April, 1966], No. 15182/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division B1] Vinyl esters of carboxylic acids are prepared by reacting the carboxylic acid in the liquid phase with acetylene at between 200‹ and 300‹ C. in the presence of a zinc salt of the carboxylic acid and a metal-containing Lewis acid as catalysts. The liquid phase may be molten zinc carboxylate or a high-boiling solvent and the Lewis acids may be the halides, sulphates or phosphates of metals such as lithium, beryllium, zinc, palladium, boron, aluminium, gallium, cerium, iron, chromium, zirconium, or uranium, iron, aluminium and didymium or mixtures thereof. Acetic, propionic, isobutyric, pivalic, palmitic, stearic, benzoic, and isophthalic acids and those prepared by Koch synthesis (5-9 C) may be vinylated. |
