A process for the production of carbodiimides and carbodiimide-isocyanate adducts

Polycarbodiimides are prepared by heating organic di- or poly-isocyanates at above 150 DEG C. in presence of a catalyst R2NCOY or R2NCSY, where R is H, alkyl or aryl, or R2N forms a ring, and Y is H, alkyl, aryl, alkoxyphosphono, aryloxyphosphono or NQ2 in which one Q is H, alkyl or aryl and the oth...

Summary:Polycarbodiimides are prepared by heating organic di- or poly-isocyanates at above 150 DEG C. in presence of a catalyst R2NCOY or R2NCSY, where R is H, alkyl or aryl, or R2N forms a ring, and Y is H, alkyl, aryl, alkoxyphosphono, aryloxyphosphono or NQ2 in which one Q is H, alkyl or aryl and the other Q is the same, alkoxyphosphono, aryloxyphosphono or an acyl radical derived from a carboxylic or sulphonic acid; or one R and Y may be closed to form a ring. In examples, diphenylmethane-, benzene-, toluene- and hexamethylene-diisocyanates are used.ALSO:Carbodiimides or carbodiimide-isocyanate adducts are prepared by heating an organic isocyanate at above 150 DEG C. in presence of a catalyst R2NCOY or R2NCSY, where R is H, alkyl or aryl, or R2N forms a ring, and Y is H, alkyl, aryl, alkoxyphosphono, aryloxyphosphono or NQ2 in which one Q is H, alkyl or aryl and the other Q is the same, alkoxyphosphono, aryloxyphosphono or an acyl radical derived from a carboxylic or sulphonic acid; or one R and Y may be closed to form a ring. Dimethoxyphosphonoform - N - methylanilide is prepared in Example 5 by heating a mixture of PhNMeCOCl and P(OMe)3 at 110 DEG C.
