Summary:Improved yields of 5-amino-4-imidazolecarboxamide ribofuranoside in the production thereof by culturing in an aqueous culture medium a strain of a species of the genus Bacillus, which is capable of producing the said ribofuranoside, are obtained by (i) using a medium containing in solution at least 30 mg./dl potassium ions, or (ii) neutralizing the medium with ammonia and using a medium containing in solution at least 10 mg./dl magnesium ions and/or at least 50 mg./dl calcium ions. It is preferred to add the ions in the form of potassium chloride or phosphate, magnesium sulphate or calcium chloride. When the potassium ion concentration is at least 30 mg./dl, the phosphate ion concentration may be below 20 mg./dl. Suitable species for culturing are Bacillus megatherium and Bacillus subtilis.
