Summary:Emulsifiers which may be used to prepare water-in-oil emulsions by a method described in Division B1 are: (1), the reaction product of diethylene glycol/adipic acid polyester, polyethylene oxide and diphenyl methane-4,41-diglycidic ether (see Specification 1,076,319); (2), a graft polymer of polystyrene on polyethylene oxide, the polymer being prepared in methanolic solution in an autoclave at 120 DEG C. using benzoyl peroxide + dicumyl peroxide; (3), a copolymer of 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate and dodecylmethacrylate prepared at 65 DEG C. in gasoline using azo-di-isobutyronitrile as catalyst. Emulsifier (2) is used to prepare an emulsion of water in carbon tetrachloride with polybutadiene, and an emulsion of an aqueous solution in styrene with a polyester resin prepared from maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, 1,2-propylene glycol and ethylene glycol. Emulsifier (3) is used to prepare an emulsion of water and a phthalocyanine pigment in petrol.ALSO:A reverse (water-in-oil) emulsion which may contain 0.5 to 95 volume % aqueous phase may be prepared by a process comprising introducing the components of the emulsion to be prepared simultaneously into a quantity of the reverse emulsion already present in a mixing chamber, emulsifying the resulting mixture and withdrawing the finished emulsion from the mixing chamber, the relative proportions of the components being added being such that the total volume of emulsion initially present plus oil component added is always greater than the volume of unemulsified aqueous component present. Examples relate to emulsification of water/glycerol in xylene with the reaction product of diethylene glycol/adipic acid polyester with polyethylene oxide and diphenylmethane-4,41-diglycidic ether; of water in carbon tetrachloride with polybutadiene and a graft polymer of polystyrene on polyethylene oxide; of water and a phthalocyanine pigment in petrol with a copolymer of 2-hydroxypropylmethacrylate and dodecylmethacrylate; and of water containing K2S2O8, NaOCOCH3 and NaHSO3 in styrene with a polyester resin and a graft polymer of polystyrene on polyethylene oxide.
