Fire retardant bituminous compositions
A fire-retardant composition comprises (a) bituminous material and (b) a Diels-Alder adduct of (i) a polyunsaturated aliphatic compound and (ii) a polyhalogenated cyclopentadiene of formula <FORM:1087040/C3/1> where X = F, Cl, or Br and Y = F, Cl, Br, or alkoxy, (b) contains at least 0.6 mole...

Summary: | A fire-retardant composition comprises (a) bituminous material and (b) a Diels-Alder adduct of (i) a polyunsaturated aliphatic compound and (ii) a polyhalogenated cyclopentadiene of formula <FORM:1087040/C3/1> where X = F, Cl, or Br and Y = F, Cl, Br, or alkoxy, (b) contains at least 0.6 mole (ii) per mole (i). Generally about 2-50% wt. (b) based on the wt. of (a) is mixed with (a). (i) may have e.g. 4-14 C atoms, or it may be polybutadiene. (a) may be natural petroleum or coal tar asphalt or pitch, and may contain vegetable or animal oils, asbestos, silica, limestone, slate dust, clay, black or coloured pigments, CaCO3, or halogenated wax products. Also present may be e.g. 1-10% wt. of antimony compounds, e.g. as oxide, sulphide, alkali metal salts, antimony salts of organic acids and their derivatives, or salts and esters of antimonious acids and their derivatives. The compositions may be used for coating and may be applied by heat and/or pressure or sprayed as a solution in a volatile halogenated hydrocarbon solvent which exerts a "snuffing action" during application. The compositions may be used in the preparation of roofing and shingles, floor coverings, tarpaulins, wrapping and packing paper, electrical insulation, cords and ropes, wallboard, insulating board, and bituminous pipes.ALSO:A Diels-Alder adduct of (i) a polyunsaturated aliphatic compound and (ii) a polyhalogenated cyclopentadiene of formula <FORM:1087040/C2/1> where X=F, Cl, or Br and Y=F, Cl, Br, or alkoxy, contains at least 0.6 mole (ii) per mole (i). (i) may have e.g. 4-14 C atoms, or it may be polybutadiene. The adduct may be mixed with bitumen to give a fire-retardant composition (see Division B2).ALSO:A bituminous material for impregnating felt or cloth contains a Diels-Alder adduct of (i) a polyunsaturated aliphatic compound and (ii) a polyhalogenated cyclopentadiene of formule:- <FORM:1087040/D1-D2/1> where X = F, Cl, or Br and Y = F, Cl, Br, or alkoxy, in a ratio of at least 0.6 mole (ii) per mole (i). Generally about 2 - 50% of the adduct is mixed with the bituminous material. (i) may have e.g. 4-14 C atoms, or it may be polybutadiene. The bituminous material may be natural petroleum or coal tar asphalt or pitch, and may contain vegetable or animal oils, asbestos, silica, limestone, slate dust, clay, black or coloured pigments, CaCO3, or halogenated wax products. Also present may be e.g. 1-10% of antimony compounds e.g. as oxide, sulphide, alkali metal salts, antimony salts of organic acids and their derivatives, or salts and esters of antimonious acids and their derivatives.ALSO:A fire-retardant composition comprises (a) bituminous material and (b) a Diels-Alder adduct of (i) a polyunsaturated aliphatic compound and (ii) a polyhalogenated cyclopentadiene of formula:- <FORM:1087040/B1-B2/1> where X=F, Cl, or Br and Y=F, Cl, Br, or alkoxy (b) contains at least 0.6 mole (ii) per mole (i).
