Internally plasticized copolymers and production thereof

An internally plasticized terpolymer comprises 100 parts by weight vinyl chloride; 10 to 100 parts of an alkoxyalkyl acrylate CH2=CH-CO-(OR1)n-OR where R is C1- 4 alkyl, R1 is C2- 4 alkylene and n is 1 to 10, and 10 to 100 parts of vinyl acetate, butyrate or 2-ethylhexoate or a C2- 12 ester of acryl...

Summary:An internally plasticized terpolymer comprises 100 parts by weight vinyl chloride; 10 to 100 parts of an alkoxyalkyl acrylate CH2=CH-CO-(OR1)n-OR where R is C1- 4 alkyl, R1 is C2- 4 alkylene and n is 1 to 10, and 10 to 100 parts of vinyl acetate, butyrate or 2-ethylhexoate or a C2- 12 ester of acrylic, methacrylic, maleic, fumaric, citraconic, crotonic or itaconic acid. Copolymerization may be effected in solution, emulsion or suspension, e.g. with polyvinyl alcohol, gelatin, methyl cellulose or starch as suspending agent. Specified catalysts are potassium persulphate, benzoyl or lauroyl peroxide with or without an amine activator, azodiisobutyronitrile and persulphate/bisulphite redox combination. Mercaptans, e.g. t.-butyl or n-hexylmercaptan, may be present as chain modifiers. The products may be used for coating, dipping or spraying fabrics, metal or wood; dried for use in calendering, extruding or moulding, and especially, compounded with fillers, e.g. chalk, clay, wood flour or asbestos fibres, for floor tiles which are resistant to hydrocarbon solvents.ALSO:An internally plastized terpolymer comprises 100 parts by weight vinyl chloride; 10-100 parts of an alkoxyalkyl acrylate CH2=CH-CO-(OR1)n-OR where R is C1-4 alkyl, R1 is C2-4 alkylene and n is 1-10, and 10-100 parts of vinyl acetate, butyrate or 2-ethylhexoate or a C2-12 ester of acrylic, methacrylic, maleic, fumaric, citraconic, crotonic or itaconic acid.
