Summary:288,390. Takayama, Y. Jan. 22, 1927. Betaine hydrochloride, and glutamic acid are recovered from the waste liquor produced in distilling alcohol from fermented beet molasses, by dialyzing the liquor so as to remove yeast and uncrystallizable substances and adding hydrochloric or sulphuric acid after concentration to collect potassium chloride or sulphate, and by further concentration betaine hydrochloride separates. The remaining liquor is heated under pressure after adding hydrochloric acid in excess so as to convert glutimic acid into glutamic acid hydrochloride and to remove the impure matters in the form of a humus like substance. On concentrating and cooling glutamic acid hydrochloride crystallizes out. In an example a diffusion apparatus is used divided into numerous chambers by diaphragms, adjacent chambers being filled with the material and fresh water respectively, and dialysis is effected by an electric current or otherwise.
