Summary:<PICT:1073531/C2/1> <PICT:1073531/C2/2> An antibiotic iyomycin B, which may be separated into components B1, B2, B3, B4 and B5, is produced by cultivating Streptomyces phaeoverticillatus, especially strain NRRL 3021. The antibiotic complex is recovered from the clarified broth by (A) extraction at pH 7.0 to 9.5 with an ester of a fatty acid containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a water-immiscible aliphatic alcohol, an aromatic hydrocarbon or a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon; (B) precipitation with aluminium hydroxide, a heavy metal salt e.g. zinc chloride or an inorganic salting-out agent, e.g. (NH4)2SO4; or (C) adsorption on a cation exchange resin, followed by elution with HCl or aqueous ammonia followed by extraction as in (A). Alternatively, the culture broth is adjusted to 9.0 to 9.5, the resultant precipitate and mycelium separated and extracted with acetone or an aliphatic alcohol of 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The complex may be separated into its components by absorbing a solution of iyomycin B in methanol on to a column packed with alumina moistened with HCl, eluting wit methanol to obtain fractions B1, B2, B3 and B4 and then with water to obtain B5. The antibiotic has antitumor and antibacterial properties. The characteristic properties of components B1 and B4 are as shown below: <TABS:1073531/C2/1>
