Summary:The use of phosphoric acid mono- and/or di-esters of alkoxylated alcohols as surfactants in the assisted recovery of petroleum. The use of phosphate esters of formula RO(C 3H 6O) x-(C 2H 4O) y-P(=O)(OM) 2 (I) and/or [RO(C 3H 6O) x-(C 2H 4O) y] 2-P(=O)(OM) (II) as surfactants in the assisted recovery of petroleum. R : hydrocarbyl (linear or branched aliphatic, cyclic or aromatic, saturated or unsaturated, optionally with hetero-atoms); x : 0-20; y : 1-20; M : H, Na, K or an organic acid residue .Independent claims are also included for (1) a method (M1) for the assisted recovery of petroleum from underground formations by injecting a fluid containing (I) and/or (II) and passing this fluid through the formation so as to displace and recover the petroleum (2) a method (M2) for the assisted recovery of petroleum by (a) injecting a liquid containing an aqueous medium, surfactant(s) (I) and/or (II) and possibly a co-surfactant and then (b) recovering this liquid containing petroleum (3) formulations, especially for the above application, containing (I) and/or (II) and possibly a co-surfactant .
