Summary:The filter element (1) consists of a support (12) e.g. of extruded ceramic material with an outer surface (14) and three or more channels (161 - 166). The channels have peripheral walls (18) adjacent to the outer surface of the support, shaped so that the distance between the wall and outer surface reduces from the centre of the channel to its outer edges. In addition the side walls (20) of the channels form partitions (22) of varying thickness between adjacent channels. Each partition has one portion of constant thickness and another in which the thickness increases from the centre of the support outwards. Variants of the design can have one or more rows of channels in concentric rings.
