The method involves evaluating an effect of a rise in temperature of a reference trap by grades of temperature. A number of time units passed by the trap in the grades is determined for the trap during utilization. An ageing factor represented by a sum of products is determined for the trap, where each product is the number of time units passed by the trap in one of the grades by severity factors determined for each grade. An independent claim is also included for utilization of a method for managing regeneration phases of a catalytic nitrogen oxide trap. L'invention concerne un procédé d'estimation du vieillissement thermique d'un piège catalytique à oxydes d'azote d'un type déterminé placé en utilisation dans la ligne d'échappement d'un moteur à combustion interne comprenant :- une étape préliminaire de calibrage expérimental ; un facteur (s) de sévérité est déterminé pour une unité de temps passée dans une classe de température ;- la détermination, pour le piège du type déterminé en cours d'utilisation, du nombre (N) d'unités de temps passé par ce piège dans chaque classe de température ; et- la détermination, pour le piège du type déterminé en cours d'utilisation, d'un facteur (v) de vieillissement v = Σ (N * s).Elle concerne aussi_ l'application d'un tel procédé à la gestion des phases de régénération du piège.
