Summary:The detector has an evaluating unit to detect an object or a person (7) occupying a seat (10) of a vehicle from the signal propagation delay between the transmission and reception of high-frequency signals, information contained in the high-frequency signals, and a received signal strength. A belt sensor is connected to the evaluating unit to detect if a safety belt (20) has been fastened. The safety belt is disposed to secure the object or person on the seat. The evaluating unit is connected to a high-frequency transmitter and to a high-frequency receiver which can be arranged individually or as a common transceiver (1) inside a vehicle. Several reflectors (6) are disposed in or on the seat for reflecting high-frequency signals and to cause the high-frequency signals to traverse the object or person on the seat at least partially attenuated. An independent claim is also included for detecting an object or a person on a seat of a vehicle.
