Acylation of aromatic compounds with benzoyl halides, useful for preparation of aromatic ketones, with indium oxide or hydroxide as recyclable catalyst

Method for acylation of aromatic hydrocarbons (A) with a benzoyl halide (II) to form a ketone (III) is done in presence of indium(III) oxide or hydroxide as catalyst (X), and after recovery of (III), (X) can be used in further acylations. Method for acylation of aromatic hydrocarbons (A), i.e. benze...

Summary:Method for acylation of aromatic hydrocarbons (A) with a benzoyl halide (II) to form a ketone (III) is done in presence of indium(III) oxide or hydroxide as catalyst (X), and after recovery of (III), (X) can be used in further acylations. Method for acylation of aromatic hydrocarbons (A), i.e. benzene, fused-ring aromatics, or Rn-substituted benzene, with a benzoyl halide, R2COX (II) to form a ketone of formula (III) is done in presence of indium(III) oxide or hydroxide as catalyst (X), and after recovery of (III), (X) can be used in further acylations. R = 1-10C alkyl or alkoxy, R1COO, halo, 1-3C perhaloalkyl, phenyl (optionally substituted by one or more halo), nitro, cyano, or R1OCO; R1 = 1-10C alkyl; R2 = phenyl, optionally substituted by one or more chloro, bromo, fluoro, or 1-10C alkyl; and n = 1-4.
