Summary:This process for enhancing the quality of digital images obtained by image processing incorporating throughput reduction coding, a process including, after decoding and before restoring the images thus decoded, an operation termed post-filtering, carried out per elementary image point, is such that the post-filtering operation includes: for each of the elementary points of the image, a low-pass two-dimensional filtering whose type, that is to say the value of the weighting coefficients applied to the various elementary points surrounding the elementary point to be filtered, in order to calculate the weighted mean representing the said low-pass filtering, is chosen so as to favour a particular direction corresponding to a particular shape of contour to be preserved, in the event of detecting the presence of such a contour passing through the relevant point, or so as not to favour any particular direction in the contrary event.
