Summary:The invention relates to a method of fabricating a composite element which includes a core made of superconducting ceramic material and a metal outer casing. This method consists in putting a powder of a superconducting ceramic material or a powder capable of forming a superconducting ceramic material into a ductile metal tube having open porosity, in sealing the tube at both its ends and in subjecting it to a swaging (shrinkage) operation in order to form the composite element which subsequently undergoes a sintering heat treatment and a gas-diffusion treatment in order to render the ceramic material superconducting. The composite element can subsequently be inserted into a gas-impermeable sheath. The metal tube can be made from a standard metal or from a standard metal alloy, and the pores of the porous metal tube may optionally be covered with a layer of noble metal, such as silver.
