Summary: | The alternator transmission system includes the shaft (12) of the alternator (1) connected to a pinion (30) with channels (13) preventing rotation of the pinion on the shaft. The pinion forms part of an epicylcic gear train, around which there is a satellite carrier (40). This satellite carrier is fixed to the pulley (41) which is driven by a belt (42) attached to the engine. An electromagnetic brake (54) including a coil (55) is able to change the drive ratio of the epicyclic gear system. The alternator fan however is connected to the pulley and satellite carrier, so that it runs at the speed of the input to the gear system, and not at the higher alternator speed. ADVANTAGE - Alternator fan does not run at excessive speed, wasting power.
