The invention relates to a two-stroke internal combustion engine and to a method for making such an engine operate. This method for making an engine operate, the engine comprising a cylinder 14, a piston 13 moving in this cylinder and forming, together with it, a combustion chamber 17, and an air inlet orifice 20 and an exhaust orifice 21, consists in admitting air, compressing it in the chamber 17, injecting the fuel into the air and igniting it, in discharging the combustion products at 21, in detecting the load and speed of the engine and in controlling the flow of the gas into the chamber 17 according to a predetermined relationship with respect to the speed and load of the engine. Application particularly to two-stroke engines for propelling a motor vehicle or a boat.
