Production of expanded slag in fragmented form as grains or pebbles from molten metallurgical slag, inside a cylindrical enclosure 1. The cylindrical enclosure or drum 1 can rotate about its axis XX which is inclined to the horizontal. The drum 1 through which the slag passes between its upstream upper end and its downstream lower end comprises three successive slag treatment zones A, B, C in which there are provided on the inner wall of the drum 1 three kinds of blades or teeth at a distance from each other to cool the slag, to make it fall back onto itself, to fragment it and to slow down its progress from the upstream end towards the downstream end. For its expansion, the slag is left subjected to the action of steam. Production of fragmented slag expanded immediately on leaving the drum 1, usable immediately in the manufacture of materials of construction.
