Summary:Each roller in a roller bearing has varying diameters along its length. The longitudinal surface is formed along varying radii of curvature. The diameters are functions of the contact stress along the roller, the length of the roller, any angular misalignment, and the effective diameter of the bearing. The varying diameters are such that a uniform contact stress is placed on each roller. If desired instead of the rollers, a race may be shaped to cause the uniform contact stress.
