A washing machine in which the laundry is confined by a rotary drum having perforated walls, wets and rinses the fabrics by use of a recirculating spray instead of by persistent total or partial immersion of the drum within a body of water. Use of a repetitive shower or cascade extraction principle significantly reduces the total quantity of water required to achieve a given degree of dirt extraction, e.g. 5 kg of laundry may be washed using a total of 15 litres of water.S Reducing the water volume used reduces the amount of heat input required accordingly. For a machine with a front-loading drum turning about a horizontal axis, the spray may be injected either via a nozzle adjacent to the door or via a nozzle fed via a pipe coaxial with or branched into a hollow drum shaft. Water recirculation may be via the drainage pump and suitable line switching valves or, pref., via a separate pump. Part of each set of liquid recovered from the drum may be drained away and replaced with a corresponding portion of clean water. The water is pref. heated within the machine. The drum speed may be raised to dispel radially throughout the circumference of a perforated drum water introduced as a coaxial spray. /7.
