Summary:The quenching device is intended for low voltage a.c. contactors of high rated current. It has at least one contact point with a parallel auxiliary electrode system and an associated semi-conductor device. The latter disconnects the current flowing across the auxiliary electrode system during zero passage. Parallel to the contact point is additionally provided a further auxiliary electrode system, both these systems consisting of two auxiliary electrodes each. The light arc is driven to one or the other auxiliary electrode system by a magnetic direct field according to the polarity. The semiconductor rectifier is connected in series with the auxiliary electrodes of each system. Preferably auxiliary electrodes for identical load current polarity are interconnected by rectifiers operated in forward direction for this polarity.
