Summary:Solar energy absorbed by a surface is used to provide heated water for buildings. The radiation absorbed is measured by a resistive element in a chamber within the detecting surface. Two identical sealed chambers (1a,1b) in expanded polystyrene (14) are connected by a tube (21) containing a gas to form a symmetrical assembly. Both chambers contain a detector surface (3a,b) comprising plates which absorb the radiation. They also contain electrical heating elements (4a,b). One chamber is closed by a transparent cover while the other (1b) is covered by a mirror. Three reservoirs (7,7a,7b) in the tube contain mercury to form electrical contacts in a battery (9) circuit powering the resistive elements. A counter (12) indicates the energy required to heat the resistive elements to balance the received energy.
