Summary:Polyoxymethylene having at least one free terminal hydroxy group in the chain and an average molecular weight of at least 10,000 is reacted with acetic anhydride under extraction conditions at 90 DEG to 160 DEG C. replacing the continuously extracted quantity of acetic anhydride by supplying the corresponding amount of fresh acetic anhydride and recovering the acetylated polyoxymethylene. The reaction may be effected for a time before the continuous extraction which may take place at a speed corresponding to the supply of the fresh acetic acid, with acetic anhydride containing from 1 to 5% of free acetic acid and in the presence of an acetylation catalyst. Specifications 864,403 and 868,256 are referred to.
