Summary:Linear high molecular weight amorphous copolymers of ethylene with propylene or butene-1 are made by copolymerizing at a temperature of from 0 DEG to - 80 DEG C. a mixture of the monomers in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent and a catalyst prepared at 0-80 DEG C., consisting of the reaction product of a dialkyl aluminium monohalide, a monoalkyl aluminium dihalide, or an equimolar mixture with a hydrocarbon-soluble halide or vanadium. The copolymerization is effected in the liquid phase and there is maintained therein a molar ratio between propylene:ethylene of at least 4:1 and between butene:ethylene of at least 25:1. The vanadium halide may be vanadium tetrachloride or tetrabromide, or vanadyl trichloride. The copolymerization is carried out in the presence of a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon, and it may be effected continuously. The copolymers may be recovered by conventional techniques, and vulcanized by known methods such as with sulphur and peroxides. Specification 985,594 also is referred to.
