Summary: | Basic lead phthalate (c.f. Specification 588,717) is made by mixing appropriate amounts of litharge and phthalic anhydride as dry powders with sufficient water to make a workable paste, heating the mixture for 2-3 hours at 75-100 DEG C. with continued stirring and addition of further water in an amount sufficient merely to keep the mixture at an acceptable consistency and finally discharging the paste and drying and powdering it without filtration. The water first added may contain an acid catalyst, e.g. formic, acetic or propionic acid, and may also contain a wetting agent, e.g. potassium or ammonium stearate. Examples are given. |
